Kapeweñoz Specialty Coffee

Hi, I'm John Rey "Biboy" Plaza. I am an experienced barista, cupper, and roaster for 12 years. I lost my job last October 2020 when the coffee shop that I worked at was forced to close down after enduring the brunt of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Davao City for seven months. Around the third week of November, I turned my passion for coffee into a business and started “Kapeweñoz,” a play of the words kape (coffee) and Dabawenyos. With my old ironing board at home, I set it on top of my motorcycle and convert it into a mobile coffee bar. It took some time for me to find a nice location where I could sell the coffee. I attempted to put up my mobile coffee shop along Coastal Road, in Ecoland, and near call centers. I eventually located a suitable place in Lanang after a few spot tests. As a business start-up, it also took a while before I started to profit from my small business venture. I was unable to earn money for a few days since they were unaware of what I was offering. After a little bit of educating passers-by and slowly introducing them to specialty coffee, I gradually encountered clients who adore and appreciate coffee. Now, Kapewenoz continues to provide a unique coffee experience while also contributing to the future growth of Mindanao's coffee industry by promoting premium specialty beans. MY MAIN GOAL IS TO INSPIRE PEOPLE. I hope that as I continue to make people smile with a cup of Kapeweñoz coffee, may we all have the courage and opportunity to pursue our dreams and passion.
